Republican Tax Teams Deep Dive

In April, the Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee Jason Smith (R-MO-08) and Tax Subcommittee Chairman Mike Kelly (PA-16) announced the formation of ten Committee Tax Teams. The teams are comprised of Ways and Means Republican members, to address the key tax provisions from the 2017 Trump tax cuts that are set to expire in 2025.

Iterations of tax teams have been used before, leading up to the 2017 law, however, those teams were bipartisan and focused on specific parts of the tax code.

Chairman Smith’s teams focus on broader issue areas, such as the American Workforce and U.S. Innovation. The teams are also accepting public comment through October 15th. Senate Finance Committee ranking member Mike Crapo (R-ID) has said he is looking to put together similar groups in the Senate, but Democrats in both chambers have expressed no interest in creating teams of their own.

Besides the concern over the teams being exclusive to Republican members, other concerns have come up over the overlapping jurisdictions many of the teams have. Since the directives of the teams are quite broad, it is not entirely clear which sections of the tax code each will cover. Here is a list of all the teams, their chairs, and who is on them. Constitution Partners will continue monitoring the teams as they get their work underway.
